Frequently asked SERVSAFE questions

Q. Are all manager food safety classes ServSafe?
A. ServSafe is the National Restaurant Association's Educational Foundation food safety certification program. It is recognized in all 50 states and is recognized as the "top of the line" program. It accounts for 95% of all food safety instruction in Mississippi. All classes listed on this page are genuine ServSafe.
Q. How long is my certificate valid?
A. All certificates are valid for five years from the date of issue.
Q. How long is the class?
A. The Mississippi Departement of Health mandates at least eight hours of training. The MHRA classes start at 7:45 a.m. and you are finished about 4:00. The state requires that persons attending one-day classes have their book in advance, so preregistration is essential.
Q. Who must have a certificate?
A. At least one manager who actually works in the operation must have a certificate. The state recommends but can require additional certificates. In fact, every shift should have at least one manager certified and many operations have more.
Q. Is there a basic course for employees who do not need to be certified?
A. Yes. There is a ServSafe employee guide, which is 44-pages, and costs $5. It is designed for the certified manager to use to train all employees in-house. This does not meet the state requirement for certification, but is essential to a safe kitchen. Contact the MHRA office 601-420.4210.
Q. I lost my certificate can I obtain a duplicate?
A. Yes. Contact National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation at www.servsafe.com
Q. Some classes are two and three days. What's the difference?
A. MHRA classes are one-day, however Mississippi State Extension Service classes are two days and others may be two or three days and some are taught at night. The test and certificate are the same. Some students benefit from the longer classes, while others may only need the one-day minimum. The important factor is making sure you are attending a genuine ServSafe course. Mississippi State Extension Service and Community College courses are always genuine ServSafe. There is a difference. Make sure you are getting what you are paying for.
Q. I have a group of people who need training. Can the MHRA help with a class?
A. Yes. We will work with you to make sure you get the necessary training on a schedule that fits your needs. Contact   1-866-963-8564   or email jbonney@wildblue.net.
